WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (Mass Appeal) – Hair loss can take more than just a physical toll on the people that it affects … But luckily there are more and more options out there for people who are looking to save their hairline.
Dr. Scott boden guides patients through the world of hair care options and is here to shed some light on the subject.

Reconstructing a new hairline requires surgical as well as artistic skill. It is critically important to get it right the first time and thus requires considerable forethought and planning. Dr. Boden will work closely with you to learn your cosmetic goals and design a hairline that is appropriate to your features and age. Since the hair that is transplanted will continue to grow forever, it is crucial to recognize and plan for what will continue to look aesthetically pleasing as you age.

Follicular units are distinct groupings of usually one to four terminal hairs. The follicular unit is thus a naturally occurring physiologic, as well as an anatomic entity.

Today’s hair transplant procedures utilize natural occurring groupings of 1-4 hairs known as follicular units. With careful and meticulous technique, Dr. Boden can safely transplant a large numbers of follicular unit grafts per session. The use of these units helps to ensure that the cosmetic result of the transplant will appear completely natural. Dr. Boden utilizes follicular units exclusively and work with highly trained technicians who specialize in this procedure.

The evolution of microscopic dissection and follicular unit transplantation has been that this procedure can be practical for other parts of the body including eyebrows and eyelashes. It is also a practical means to address the thinning that is commonly seen in women who have a more diffuse female pattern of hair loss. The side-effects of hair transplantation surgery are relatively minor and serious problems are rare. Modern hair transplantation surgery is comfortable, predictable, and the results are incredibly natural with extremely high patient satisfaction. Dr. Boden commonly hears from his patients that their one regret was that they did not proceed with transplantation sooner.

Follicular Unit Extraction

“FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction, or in other words, removing or extracting one individual hair follicle at a time,” said Dr. Scott Boden, Hair Transplantation surgeon.

Dr. Boden is a board certified hair restoration surgeon and says the biggest advantage of FUE is no scarring in the back where the follicle is removed.

“We remove the hair from that stable area, transplant it into areas where there’s hair loss and the hair is going to grow and stay forever,” Dr. Boden said.

“Every morning I wake up, looking forward to fixing my hair,” she said.

Dr. Boden says the biggest reason for hair loss or hair thinning is genetics. He does recommend laser therapy to promote healing for patients who undergo hair transplantation.

Dr. Boden first treated Genny in April 2010. She had hair transplantation utilizing approximately 700 individual follicular units.  The 5 month post-op photos represent growth to date.  Ultimate density is expected to increase significantly and appearance will continue to improve. Operation Restore

This young male cancer survivor, currently in his 30’s, was missing half an eyebrow after having a basal cell tumor removed from the area several years ago. The hair never grew back and the patient felt very self conscious about his face.

Dr. Boden performed the eyebrow transplant using a follicular unit extraction technique. This new technique excises single follicular units one at a time and is a less invasive procedure making scarring less visible.

“Often times people view hair restoration as a vanity thing,” said Dr. Boden. “But, there are many cases where injuries and medical conditions have caused permanent hair loss. It’s a great feeling to hear someone proclaim, ‘You have given me my face back as well as my self confidence.’”

In addition to managing his own practice, Dr. Boden is a participating physician with the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons Operation Restore program, which helps people who have lost hair as a result of disease or trauma and lack the financial resources to have corrective hair restoration surgery.

“Through Operation Restore and patient referrals, these pro bono opportunities have been the most rewarding for me,” said Dr. Boden. “I am helping someone who has already overcome so much get a bit of their self esteem back through hair restoration – a procedure they wouldn’t have been able to have otherwise,” said Dr. Boden.
