The 20th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons will take place October 17-20, 2012 in the
Bahamas.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Oct 16, 2012 – Scott Boden, MD., a hair transplant surgeon and medical director for Hair Restoration & Aesthetic Medicine Center with offices in Wethersfield and Guilford, CT, will be one of the Basic Course instructors for Follicular Unit Extraction: Techniques and Devices, for physicians new to the practice of hair restoration surgery. The Course will be taught at the 20th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) in Paradise, Bahamas. Dr. Boden, will teach a hands-on session on hair restoration site preparation.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the latest technique in Hair Transplantation surgery, and involves meticulously removing individual growing hair follicles
from the donor region at the back of the head and then re-implanting them one-by-one into areas of hair loss. A main advantage of FUE is that there is no resulting fine line where the donor hair has been removed. This enables a hair transplant patient to wear his or her hair very short (#1 or #2 hair clipper) with no visible evidence of a linear donor area scar.

How important are bedside manners? I recently read an article discussing doctors and ‘Bedside Manners’. It said that good bedside manners can be
important in helping patients recover more quickly form serious illnesses, however too many healthcare professionals have too little time to communicate to their patients.

Is this relevant to people with hair loss? Do hair-loss sufferers need help in handling their condition, even though their problem isn’t life threatening? I
say, yes! Hair loss may not be life threatening, but it is often ‘life-altering’. I’ve heard some ‘hair raising’ stories of people who have seen consultants who are very insulting and not very empathetic.

At HRAM Center from your initial phone call to your consultation you are treated with respect. We call this the HRAM difference.

What
is the HRAM difference?

1) Dr. Boden personally meets with every client, (Yes, you actually meet with the Doctor AND it is FREE.)

2)The staff at Dr. Boden’s office have over 40 years combined experience in the Hair loss industry and aren’t “rented” or flown in.

3) Dr. Boden is a fulltime Doctor who specializes in both Medical and Surgical Hair loss treatments for both men and women.

4) Dr. Boden and his team of professionals perform one surgery per day. This isn’t a factory, each patient’s every need is tended to from
playing their preferred music to ordering lunch and accommodating special dietary requests.

Treating people with hair loss is not just about giving them a treatment regimen to follow, it’s also about helping them cope with their condition until results are seen (which can sometimes take up to six months). When you choose a Hair transplant surgeon you are extremely concerned about losing your hair and you are beside yourself with worry that you are going bald; as well as finding and treating the causes of
your condition, make sure the person you’re seeing will show empathy and understanding, and that his/her staff are there for you when the specialist is busy. This way, your condition may improve more quickly.

So if you want an excellent Hair transplant Doctor who also has a great bedside manner then call 860-563-1400 to schedule your complimentary consultation or visit www.hairtransplantct.com

Dr. Boden serves patients in the New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island vicinity with offices conveniently located throughout
Connecticut. Traveling from further away? Ask about our travel allowance.

We all know that Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin”, could it be that Vitamin D is the cure for baldness? New research on Vitamin D, and its receptors in hair follicles, has taken us down a path that could, potentially, lead to new medical treatments for hair loss.

The Vitamin D receptor was previously known to stimulate hair follicles, which were in the dormant phase of hair growth, to grow hair when activated. The research into Vitamin D and its effect on hair and skin, centers around this receptor.

There are three main groups researching Vitamin D’s role relative to hair loss. The first group of researchers — based in San Francisco, California — has discovered that a molecule, called MED, suppresses the Vitamin D receptor, thereby preventing the follicle from growing a new hair. Their research in mice found that blocking the MED molecule allowed mice to grow more hair. A second research team, from Harvard Medical School, has found a molecule that activates the receptor. However, they have been unable to use the molecule to grow new hair.

Another research third group, based in Japan, used Vitamin D to stimulate stem cells to become hair-producing follicles in rats. Dr. Kotaro Yoshimura says of the study, “The results suggest that it may be useful in expanding human [dermal papilla cells (DPCs)] with good quality, and help establish a DPC transplantation therapy for growing hair.” His colleague on the study, Dr. Noriyuki Aoi, said, “We found that treating the dermal papilla cells with [Vitamin D] significantly enhanced the growth of new hair over that of the control group. We also observed a better rate of maturation of the follicles. In other words, the hair grew thicker and lasted longer.”

Vitamin D deficiency can have serious health consequences, however excessive Vitamin D can be harmful as well. Vitamin D supplementation might offer health benefits for people lacking enough vitamin D, but they won’t bring back lost hair, states Dr. Boden. Watch this video for more information.

New Treatments for Baldness? Scientists Find Stem Cells That Tell Hair It’s Time to Grow

ScienceDaily (Sep. 1, 2011) — Yale researchers have discovered the source of signals that trigger hair growth, an insight that may lead to new treatments for baldness.

The researchers identified stem cells within the skin’s fatty layer and showed that molecular signals from these cells were necessary to spur hair growth in mice, according to research published in the Sept. 2 issue of the journal Cell.

“If we can get these fat cells in the skin to talk to the dormant stem cells at the base of hair follicles, we might be able to get hair to grow again,” said Valerie Horsley, assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology and senior author of the paper.

Men with male pattern baldness still have stem cells in follicle roots but these stem cells lose the ability to jump-start hair regeneration. Scientists have known that these follicle stem cells need signals from within the skin to grow hair, but the source of those signals has been unclear.

Horsley’s team observed that when hair dies, the layer of fat in the scalp that comprises most of the skin’s thickness shrinks. When hair growth begins, the fat layer expands in a process called adipogenesis. Researchers found that a type of stem cell involved in creation of new fat cells — adipose precursor cells — was required for hair regeneration in mice. They also found these cells produce molecules called PDGF (platelet derived growth factors), which are necessary to produce hair growth.

Horsley’s lab is trying to identify other signals produced by adipose precursor stem cells that may play a role in regulating hair growth. She also wants to know whether these same signals are required for human hair growth. Other authors from Yale are lead author Eric Festa, Jackie Fretz, Ryan Berry, Barbara Schmidt, Matthew Rodeheffer and Mark Horowitz.

The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Connecticut Stem Cell Research Program.

According to the UK Sun Lady Gaga is going bald due to all the chemical dyes she has used on her hair, which is all part of her flamboyant and creative package. Sources state that she is turning to the product Rogaine, which is often promoted in TV commercials for arresting the baldness and promoting new hair growth. Just the mention that the world’s most recognized pop diva is using this product, should be worth millions of advertising for the Rogaine company.

The latest short haircut that Lady Gaga is sporting is what the singer is calling a “chemical haircut.” She said in a recent interview that she needed to cut her blonde hair short due to all the damage from dyes, according to Contact Music.

“The overuse of chemicals and dyes to the hair can most certainly cause hair-loss,” states Dr. Boden. Rogaine may indeed assist in regrowing some of Lady Gaga’s hair. Women and Men need to use chemicals and dyes cautiously or possibly suffer from related hair loss, states Dr. Boden.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY MAINTAINS SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF PROPECIA
(FINASTERIDE 1MG) FOR MALE HAIR LOSS IS BACKED BY PROVEN SCIENTIFIC DATA
Task force formed to study reports of sexual dysfunction in some men taking Propecia for hair loss

GENEVA, IL. – December 13, 2011. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – the world’s leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration – cautions that recent anecdotal reports of persistent sexual dysfunction by some men who have used finasteride 1mg (Propecia) to treat hair loss should not define the safety and effectiveness of this drug. Propecia is the only oral medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of hair loss in men.

From a scientific standpoint, the ISHRS reports that there are no evidence-based data substantiating the link between finasteride and persistent sexual side effects after discontinued use of the drug in numerous, double blinded, placebo controlled studies conducted evaluating the use of Propecia 1mg for hair loss.

“The health and well being of our patients is the utmost concern of the 900 physician members of the ISHRS – whether prescribing medications like Propecia or performing hair restoration surgery,” said ISHRS President Dr. Jennifer Martinick. “ISHRS members devote an average of 72% of their practices to medically and surgically treating hair loss, and collectively they have treated millions of men around the world suffering from hair loss with finasteride 1mg with virtually no side effects.”

Since receiving FDA approval in December of 1997, 20.5 million and 6.7 million patient-years of exposure using Proscar (finasteride 5mg) and Propecia (finasteride 1mg) respectively are recorded with a low adverse event profile. The ISHRS believes that these are the most current and reliable data available until further studies are conducted.

Sexual dysfunction is a complex disorder, and Dr. Martinick noted that it often can be hard to pinpoint the exact cause – particularly when multiple factors such as nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications, stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression can contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED).

“The incidence of ED in the general population is known to be quite high – as high as 49% in middle-aged and older men according to one study published in 2006 in the Archives of Internal Medicine,” said Dr. Martinick. “That being said, we owe it to our patients to address valid concerns in a scientific manner and to clarify any misleading reports so that men can make informed choices regarding the use of this medication.”

Recently, the ISHRS formed a task force to more closely examine anecdotal reports of sexual dysfunction by some Propecia users who have used the drug to treat hair loss. In addition, the ISHRS has called on the medical communities of dermatologists, hair loss physicians, urologists, endocrinologists and sexual medicine specialists to join in a colloquium to share all data and experiences with finasteride in a fact-based manner.

While many women extoll the cosmetic virtues of hair extensions — they are designed to add to the length and fullness of one’s hair — many others have realized the potential for extensions to cause hair loss.

“We have some female clients in their early 20′s that have worn hair extensions for six months and have bald spots, ” Dr. Scott Boden, a Connecticut Hair Transplant Physician states.

Some of the hair loss can be attributed to traction alopecia, which is localized hair loss that occurs with constant tugging on the follicles. However some of the problems occur due to underlying medical conditions, like anemia. Regardless the underlying cause, when someone is exposed to prolonged tension and weight from cosmetic enhancements, temporary or permanent areas of balding can occur. In some cases hair may grow back in those areas, but for individuals with permanent hair loss from extensions, hair transplantation may be the best treatment. In those cases, a visit to a hair restoration physician is the first step towards treating or repairing your hair loss.

This risk of damage to the hair is why it is important to use caution and care with extensions, as well as to have an understanding of potential issues the extensions might cause.

Dr. Boden states, “One must understand the risks associated with hair extensions, If you’re going to do any extensions it is best to not leave them in long term.”

Dr. Scott Boden offers medical and surgical hair loss solutions for female and males. Dr. Boden has offices located throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York.
