The patient is a 46-yr-old woman with diffuse female pattern hair loss (Ludwig 2 pattern.) She has a strong family history of thinning hair ("all the women in my family lose hair as they get older") and is not a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure.  She is using topical minoxidil (5% once/day), ketoconazole shampoo 2x/week, and whey protein supplementation.  She wanted to maximize medical therapy to stabilize and improve her hair loss.

Before ACell +PRP Treatment

We used PRP and Acell treatment and have followed her closely with photographs and measurements of hair mass index (HMI) using the haircheck cross-sectional measuring device.  She reports an "amazing increase in thickness" which stabilized after the first 3-4 months.  Measurements at six months and one year confirm her observation regarding increased hair thickness: the hair mass index increased 56% at six months and remained at 50% above baseline at one year.  The patient is planning to repeat the PRP/Acell treatment annually.

Dr. Boden generally recommends maximal medical therapy to treat hair loss, and PRP/Acell can be an important adjunct to support existing miniaturized hair.  It can be used in conjunction with a hair transplant procedure to support existing hair and potentially enhance more rapid regrowth.  PRP/Acell is offered as a component of medical therapy that can be particularly beneficial for patients who are not appropriate candidates for hair transplantation.
